September CJWA meeting: What I did last summer

With the passing of Labor Day, the sad news is that another summer has gone by. The good news is that CJWA will be starting up our monthly meetings again after the summer break. The September CJWA meeting will be at 7:00 on Wednesday, Sept. 11. We will have presentations from Robert Hemsen on a Queen Anne tea table that he made, Paul Hahn on building a cradle, and the Bible Box group build project. Hope to see you there, as we gear up for the woodworking busy season.

CJWA Family Picnic, Saturday, August 10

The CJWA Summer Family Picnic will be held at Bill and Becky Woodard’s home at 13 Roberts Road, Millstone Township, on August 10 from 1-6PM. You and your family (husbands, wives, significant others, kids and grandkids) are all invited. In case of rain, the picnic will be held on the following Saturday, August 17.

The club will provide hamburgers, hot dogs, soda, paper goods and cups, as we have done in the past. If everyone attending would please bring a dish or desert similar to what is done at our Holiday party, no one will leave hungry. Adult beverages are also welcome unless you want shop time. The “Grill Master” this year will be Jerry Fishlin, so the hamburgers promise to be cooked perfectly. Please let us know how many are in your group and what you are planning to bring, so that we can plan for a full assortment of food.

We have a pond for the kids to drown some worms (they might even catch some sunnies) and horse shoes for those who would like to try their skills. We live in the country on seven acres so there will be plenty of parking on the property. We have a number of chairs, but extra lawn furniture would be helpful. The house is in the woods and shaded so the sun should not be a challenge, but it has been a wet year so bring your insect repellent just in case.

Please E-mail your RSVP to wwood21500@aol.com or call 732-446-9782 or 908-618-7354.  We are looking forward to seeing one and all.

CJWA Member Exhibition

The CJWA Members Exhibition was a great success, with many projects, large and small, being shown by CJWA members.

Doyle Ephraim and Danny Birnbaum were the lucky winners of gift certificates to Monteath Lumber in the raffle for members who exhibited a piece that they made.

John Tomaniano was the winner of the napkin holder contest for his combination napkin holder and salt shaker and pepper grinder set. He also received a Monteath Lumber gift certificate.

Thanks to all the CJWA members who brought a project to display. More photos from the exhibition can be seen in the members gallery area.

June CJWA meeting: Member exhibition and napkin holder contest

The June CJWA meeting will be at 7:00 on Wednesday, June 12. As has been our tradition, we will be holding our CJWA member exhibition. You are encouraged to bring in a project to show and tell that you have finished since last year’s exhibition. Anyone who brings in a project will be entered into a raffle to win a nice prize. The rules of the contest are that the project:

  • has to be made mainly of wood
  • can be carried into the meeting by yourself

In addition, we will be having a second exhibition of napkin holders. Like the member exhibition, the napkin holder needs to be mainly of wood and relatively portable, and hopefully better looking than the picture above. The best napkin holder will be voted on, and the winner will also get a nice prize.

CJWA Summer Seminar with Frank Klausz, July 13

We are very excited to be able to bring Frank Klausz to CJWA for our summer seminar, which will be held at the Old Brick Reformed Church on Saturday, July 13 from 9am to 4pm. Frank Klausz needs no introduction, but suffice it to say that he has vast experience as a furniture maker and woodworking teacher, with numerous magazine articles and videos to his credit. Frank will be speaking on Hand Tool Joinery for Fine Furniture. But knowing Frank’s wealth of knowledge and experience, he will be sure to cover whatever topics the audience would be interested in.
The cost of the seminar will be $35 for CJWA members, which includes lunch. We will be limiting the audience to 50 people. If you are interested in attending, contact Marc Gaertner at marcleslieg@gmail.com to confirm, and the $35 will be collected at the June meeting on June 12. If there are spots left over, they will be opened up to non-members, but there is no guarantee of availability.
