June CJWA meeting: Member exhibition and napkin holder contest

The June CJWA meeting will be at 7:00 on Wednesday, June 12. As has been our tradition, we will be holding our CJWA member exhibition. You are encouraged to bring in a project to show and tell that you have finished since last year’s exhibition. Anyone who brings in a project will be entered into a raffle to win a nice prize. The rules of the contest are that the project:

  • has to be made mainly of wood
  • can be carried into the meeting by yourself

In addition, we will be having a second exhibition of napkin holders. Like the member exhibition, the napkin holder needs to be mainly of wood and relatively portable, and hopefully better looking than the picture above. The best napkin holder will be voted on, and the winner will also get a nice prize.

CJWA Summer Seminar with Frank Klausz, July 13

We are very excited to be able to bring Frank Klausz to CJWA for our summer seminar, which will be held at the Old Brick Reformed Church on Saturday, July 13 from 9am to 4pm. Frank Klausz needs no introduction, but suffice it to say that he has vast experience as a furniture maker and woodworking teacher, with numerous magazine articles and videos to his credit. Frank will be speaking on Hand Tool Joinery for Fine Furniture. But knowing Frank’s wealth of knowledge and experience, he will be sure to cover whatever topics the audience would be interested in.
The cost of the seminar will be $35 for CJWA members, which includes lunch. We will be limiting the audience to 50 people. If you are interested in attending, contact Marc Gaertner at marcleslieg@gmail.com to confirm, and the $35 will be collected at the June meeting on June 12. If there are spots left over, they will be opened up to non-members, but there is no guarantee of availability.

Lie-Nielsen Hand Tool Event at Peters Valley

Lie-Nielsen is having a Hand Tool Event at Peters Valley on April 26-27. This is an excellent opportunity to see Lie-Nielsen tools in person, and to get a lot of hands on instruction on how to use hand tools. Lie-Nielsen has been kind enough to donate a Violin Maker’s Plane to CJWA for a raffle for anyone joining the club for the first time this year. For more information on the Hand Tool Event, visit Lie-Nielsen’s website here.

April CJWA meeting: Jerry Fishlin on Arts and Crafts projects

The April meeting will be on Wednesday, April 10, at 7:00 pm. We will have a terrific presentation by Jerry Fishlin on Arts and Crafts projects. He will cover a variety of projects, and the construction and finish of each. Despite the fact that they are all Arts and Crafts projects, the construction techniques used varies from project to project. The making of trademarks of Arts and Crafts style such as pillowed ebony plugs will be discussed as well.

In addition, Bob Emmons will show a work in progress. He is making a coat tree utilizing a turned pedestal with curved shaped legs and slipper feet, and a turned spindle to top it off. He will talk about the design and construction of this project, and hopefully he won’t have glued it up yet so he can show how it all goes together.
