Camp Quality 2016

Camp Quality is a camp for kids with cancer.  Camp Quality of New Jersey was started approximately twelve years ago by the Sunrise Optimist Club of Freehold.  Camp Quality’s goal is to help children with cancer to improve their QUALITY of life.  Programs occur all year long but each year about thirty five to forty children attend a weeklong summer camp in Blairstown, NJ.  Each child has an adult companion and there is a doctor and six nurses in camp for the entire week.  Parents are not allowed, the kids have a week to just be kids again.

Central Jersey Woodworkers have been invited for the past five years to come to camp and build projects with the children. This year ten our members attended camp on Sunday morning, August 14th.  We precut and organized several different projects in advance for the kids to complete that day.  The kits were; a fold up bench, a solid all pine bench, a keepsake box, a key and mail holder, a toolbox/whatever carrier and an “animal” shaped note holder.  The kids got to assemble, glue, nail and screw their projects together prior to the paint jobs. In all, over forty projects were completed by the kids.
